Connie ClarkCopywriter and consultant Connie Clark founded her own firm, Clark Communications, in 1986, after serving as Director of Membership and Public Relations for the American Horticultural Society. In the nearly 15 years since she went out on her own, Connie has written hundreds (maybe thousands!) of successful direct mail packages for nonprofit organizations and publishers. Working with Lautman and Company in 2000 for their client, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, she won the Silver ECHO from the International Direct Marketing Association and her 4th MAXI Award from the Direct Marketing Association of Washington (DMAW). Her work has also garnered awards from the Circulation Direct Marketing Awards/Magazine Publishers of America and the American Association of Museums. Connie has written widely for industry publications and spoken at conferences sponsored by DMAW, the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives, Council for Support and Advancement of Education, Delaware Association of Nonprofit Organizations, Society for National Association Publications, and the Women's Direct Response Group. She also taught "Producing Successful Fund-Raising Literature" at George Washington University. When not writing copy, Connie is the chaplain at Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (a state psychiatric hospital) and a licensed lay preacher in the Episcopal Church. She is co-author, with Dr. Dale Matthews, of The Faith Factor: Proof of the Healing Power of Prayer (Viking, 1998). Guy LushinGuy Lushin joined Clark Communications in 1989 after serving as Copy Chief/Marketing Director for Capitol Publications in Alexandria, Virginia, where he successfully launched several new business-to-business publications and Guy managed subscription acquisition and renewal programs for newsletters and related information products. At Clark Communications, Guy has written copy for many business-to-business marketing firms, including Washington Business Information and Phillips Publishing. In addition, he has created highly successful direct mail packages and self-mailers for association clients, including the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has also branched out into fund-raising, writing for clients like the National Humane Education Society and the Physician Assistants Foundation. Before entering the direct marketing field, Guy worked as a writer, editor, and researcher for the American Meteorological Society and Rogovin Huge & Lenzner, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm which represented the State of Alaska in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Case. His quick grasp of scientific/technological subject areas has made him a specialist in writing promotions for high-tech products. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Guy pursued graduate studies in International Relations at Johns Hopkins University's School for Advanced International Studies. He is bilingual in French and English, and has what he calls a "rusty but reasonable" working knowledge of Russian. He enjoys a part-time career as a professional singer, performing with Washington area groups such as the Folger Consort, Palestrina Choir, and Woodley Ensemble, as well as in area churches.
